Step-By-Step guide to creating a vase in Blender

Step 1: Open Blender. You’ll see the default scene with a cube. Delete the cube by selecting it and pressing X, then confirm the deletion.

Step 2: Add a Cylinder. Press Shift + A to open the Add menu. Select Mesh and then choose Cylinder. In the bottom left corner, you’ll see the Add Cylinder options. Set the Vertices to 32 for a smoother appearance and leave the other settings at their defaults. Scale the cylinder to form the basic shape of the vase: Press S to scale and then Z to restrict scaling to the Z-axis. Drag your mouse to make it taller. Press S again and then move your mouse to adjust the width to your desired size.

Step 3: Enter Edit Mode. With the cylinder selected, press Tab to enter Edit Mode. Make sure you are in Vertex Select mode. You can toggle between Vertex, Edge, and Face select modes using the buttons at the top left of the 3D viewport or by pressing 1, 2, or 3 on your keyboard.

Step 4: Adjust the Vase Shape. Select the top vertices of the cylinder. Press A to deselect all, then hold Shift and right-click to select the top edge vertices. Scale the top vertices to create the opening of the vase: Press S, then drag to scale them down slightly to form the neck of the vase.

Step 5: Add Thickness to the Vase. With the top vertices still selected, press E to extrude them upward. Move your mouse slightly to define the height of the opening. Press S to scale it back down if necessary to create a more pronounced lip.

Step 6: Create a Smooth Shape. Select the entire vase by pressing A to select all. Right-click and choose Shade Smooth from the context menu to smooth out the surface of the vase.

Step 7: Add a Modifier for Better Shape (Optional). Go to the Modifiers tab in the Properties panel. Click Add Modifier and choose Subdivision Surface. This will add more geometry for a smoother appearance. Adjust the Levels Viewport to your liking, typically 2 works well. After applying the modifier, you may want to add a Solidify Modifier to give it thickness: Select the Solidify Modifier and adjust the thickness value as needed.

Step 8: Apply Materials. Go to the Material Properties tab (sphere icon). Click on New to create a new material. Adjust the material settings: Change the Base Color to a color of your choice. If you want a glass effect, lower the Roughness value and increase the Transmission value.

Step 9: Set Up the Scene. Press Shift + A and add a plane to serve as the base for your vase. Scale the plane to make it larger by pressing S to scale. Add a light source by pressing Shift + A and selecting Light > Point to illuminate the vase.

Step 10: Render the Scene. Switch to Rendered view by pressing Z and selecting Rendered or from the top right dropdown menu. Adjust the camera position as necessary: Press N to open the side panel, then select the View tab to lock the camera to view for easier positioning. Once you are satisfied with the setup, go to Render > Render Image to see your final vase.

You have successfully created a simple vase in Blender. Feel free to experiment with different shapes, materials, and lighting to create unique designs. Keep practicing and enjoy your journey in 3D modeling.
